First-ever Science Day
For our first-ever Science Day we were visited by ten engineers who held hands-on workshops for our pupils. The theme of the day was engineering and our visitors from Arup, a building services engineering company, had challenges for the children to complete throughout the day using arts and crafts materials.
The day started with Year 3 and 4 pupils building wind-powered cars, once their designs were complete, pupils put them to the test blowing on them or using handheld fans to see whose car could travel the furthest.
Following the first workshop, the Year 5-6 and 1-2 children were tasked to build a house that can withstand extreme climates. Their structures were tested using a spray bottle to simulate rain and flooding, and a fan to create high winds.
Each class was given the chance to test their engineering knowledge and work together in groups to complete their challenges. The engineers encouraged the children to think like real engineers, discussing how to get the best outcomes, and invited discussions during the session, offering the opportunity to share their skills.
After the hands-on sessions, the children created posters and a write-up about the work they did, sharing the outcomes they achieved and how they would improve their work next time. They then presented their work to the other classes, proudly showcasing the newly acquired knowledge and creating opportunities to learn from one another.
One pupil summed up the day perfectly: “I had so much fun, I want to build more things now!”
Thank you to all the engineers who visited today for volunteering their time. You made our first Science Day truly inspiring.
